Three Generations of Monterey Custom Home Builders
The Story of Balestreri Builders
When Mario and John’s father, Mario Sr., passed away in 2010, everything changed. As owner of Bethel Construction, Mario Sr. had built a reputation for integrity and craftsmanship on the Monterey Peninsula. But in California, when the licensed general contractor of a company passes away, the business must shut down.
As a leading Monterey custom home builder, Balestreri Builders continues the legacy of quality and craftsmanship established by Mario Sr.
This happened during the height of the 2009 financial crisis — the worst possible time to start over. Mario quickly earned his contractor’s license, and together with his brother John, founded Balestreri Builders.
Carrying Forward a Legacy in Uncertain Times
While Mario Sr. was the face of Bethel Construction, both Mario and John had been running and managing much of the work for years. They were more than capable, but starting a new company in the middle of a downturn was still a leap of faith.
A few amazing clients, who knew the brothers’ knowledge and skill, gave them the confidence to keep going. Both men had young families to support, but they were determined to succeed — and to carry on their father’s legacy with honor.
From Commercial Projects to Custom Homes
In the early years, Balestreri Builders focused heavily on commercial construction across the Monterey Peninsula. Notable projects included:
- Monterey Plaza Hotel – renovations of Schooners Coastal Kitchen, the reception area, multiple ballrooms, Tidal Coffee, and numerous storefronts such as The Wine Experience and Chioma Salon.
- Northridge Mall – tenant improvements for several retail spaces.
- Austino’s on Cannery Row – full renovation and build-out.
- Candyland – locations on Cannery Row and Fisherman’s Wharf.
- Casa Munras Hotel – hotel room renovations.
- Multiple Jack in the Box restaurant remodels across the area.
These projects established Balestreri Builders as a trusted name in commercial construction.
As time went on, residential work began blending into the portfolio. More and more custom homes and remodels were added to the mix. Momentum built, and Balestreri Builders became known not just for commercial projects, but for crafting some of the most trusted custom homes on the Monterey Peninsula.
The Third Generation Steps In
The next chapter came naturally. Mario and John’s sons, Mario Jr. Anthony & Nikolas— the third generation of Balestreri builders — had grown up around the business. From summers on job sites to helping out during school breaks, they absorbed their grandfather and fathers’ work ethic.
Today, they bring that same enthusiasm, skill, and mindset to the company. These aren’t paper contractors — they are hands-on builders. They get dirty, work in the field, and bring honorable carpentry skills learned the right way. Instead of just delegating, they know how to perform the work themselves.
Built on Pride, Integrity, and Craftsmanship
There is so much pride in the Balestreri family for what they do and what they stand for. This is what they bring to the table with every project. The clients are important to us— BBI are not in this business simply for financial gain. They have a genuine love for the craft, for building with integrity, and for what they have created together over three generations.
That love for the work, and the pride in doing it the right way, is what sets Balestreri Builders Inc apart.
